Psalm 98:4-5

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing.

Reflection

The invitation to worship is extended to every person in every place at every time. All the earth can join in this great shout of joy to the Lord! Our worship is meant to be loud, passionate, faith-filled, expectant and worthy of the God of all joy. Christian worship is characterized by the volume and the jubilant praise of the people of God joining together to shout and sing loud because of what God has done.

Whether we are singing or playing instruments, the sound of our worship is meant to express something within us that can only come out through music. God has created every human to be musical and so music truly is a universal language of praise to God. No matter the language, no matter the form, no matter the style, music can be used to honour, worship, celebrate God in all the earth.

So whatever role you have to play on our team this week you are part of the great shout of joy that will give God worship in our church. We make music together as a way of inviting people here to join into the great song that can be sung all around the world.

Response

Do you prefer to worship loud or quiet?

How do you see your role as part of the worship team making music together?

Can you think of a time when someone else’s joy-filled worship inspired you to do the same?

Prayer

God of joy, we want to sing and shout and celebrate You this weekend as we gather to worship. Thank You for Your church around the world and how she has been faithful in singing worship to You for thousands of years. Thank You that the jubilant songs of Your people continue to tell the incredible story of what You have done. We want the music we make this week to be played for You so that people in our church would shout for joy to You. Amen.
