I just pulled into the church parking lot a few minutes ago, which is also a voting precinct and watched as 90+ year old Carl & Jessie Palm were walking to their car after voting. Here’s the point – if they can get out and vote, you have no excuse. If you need help on who to vote for drop me a note and I’ll be glad to share some truth with you.

I read the story this morning about Charlie & Carol Gaske, who were living a quiet retired life with a home just two blocks from the ocean in Santa Monica, CA. Neighbors would see them take long walks along the beach stopping to pet other folk’s dogs and share a courteous hello with other walkers. The Gaske’s were nice and kind however for the most part they were very private. They never answered the phone and never had visitors until one day in 2011 when the FBI showed up and arrested both of them. It seems that Charlie’s real name was James “Whitey” Bulger and Carol was really Catherine Elizabeth Greig. Bulger was a notorious East Coast mobster who shared space with Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s ten most wanted list. Bulger had been one of the most feared mob bosses in Boston during the 70’s – 90’s. He was facing charges for some 19 murders.

In one moment, the charade ended, the bluff was called and the truth revealed. Jesus said in John 8:32 “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. You see at times the truth is right in front of our eyes even when we’re not looking for it. In the past months as I’ve been down and healing, God has awakened my soul to truths about me, our church and other issues that have been right in front of my eyes but I never saw them. It’s been a humbling and challenging time.

You see for some of us, maybe we’ll be like Bobby Adkins who woke up a while back and realized that while religious, he was as lost as a man could be. Today he’s in heaven because he saw the truth right in front of him.
The writer of the story about the Bulger’s shared these penetrating thoughts. He said:

For some of us maybe it’s time to see the truth that we’re trying to live out the Christian life from our own power and strength rather than out of the power of the Holy Spirit.

For some of us we may realize we’re not following Jesus, but a list of rules and rituals that we’ve become accustomed to.

For others it may be that there’s pressure on our romantic relationship because we’re looking to our significant other to do for us what only God can do.

For some of us we may be living stressed out about money because we’re putting our trust in money instead of God.
Others of us are spending our lives wrestling with guilt and shame because we think being good enough will save us instead of relying on the grace of God to save us”.

Today – I invite you to join me in seeing the truth right in front of our eyes. I can tell you it’s not easy and if you’re like me your heart may do flips and a hollowness may come into your soul. But don’t fear those feelings, just cry out to the Father. Seek His forgiveness and begin living today in His truth about who you are in Christ. I’m looking forward to living free.

Impacting tomorrow today,

Pastor Carl
