Here’s a question for you – what attracted you to your spouse? Be honest, when you first saw him/her, when you first talked to him/her what caught your attention? Was it looks, eyes, hair, build, smile, profession, or money? I can remember vividly the first time I saw my wife. I was sitting in the cafeteria on our college campus at lunch time and she came walking in and her looks got me. I’d never seen her before or met her, I didn’t even know her name. I turned to my friends, asked them if they knew who she was and I said, “I’ll let her date all the losers on campus and then she’s mine”. Of course they laughed, almost falling out of their chairs, but hey, did I speak truth or what?
While we begin the journey that builds up to love, for many reasons the real test of love comes over time. Love is that commitment that continues, that fights through the challenges and stays faithful. While we as humans don’t always stay committed I want to remind you that your Father loves you. He wasn’t attracted to you because of your looks, your build, your money or anything else that is of the flesh. He loved you for you. While it’s hard to find the exact words in Scripture, many have called Him the “Lover of my soul”. While our soul has no looks, no money, and no outward appeal, it is who we are.
Imagine that He loves you for you, not for anything else.
Charles Wesley wove into his lyrics the very words and thoughts of Scripture. In the deeply moving hymn, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” Wesley wrote:
Jesus lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly. While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high.
Hide me O my Savior hide, Till the storm of life is past. Safe into thy harbor guide, oh receive my soul at last.
Romans 8:38-39 tells us that nothing can separate from His love. In John 13:23 says, “Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved”. Always remember that you are loved by Him, no matter your looks, your position, your stuff, or your mistakes He loves your soul even to the point of assuring us that when our bodies waste away our soul will only grow to love Him more.
Today enjoy being loved by Him.
